About the Show
What happens when you wake up and everyone is married and you aren’t?
What does it mean to be a 40-year-old woman without the nuclear family, without the play dates and stroller outings everyone else around you has?
What do you do with your time, where do you go?
To gay bars, of course.
WHAT IS ‘OVER & OUT’ ABOUT?
The story of Gail in the comedic series OVER & OUT explores what it means to approach age with a tribe that isn’t your own, to redefine yourself through abundance rather than lack, to forge family in a community that’s an unlikely choice for a woman of a certain age. Upon turning 40, in the heart of NYC, Gail abandons her group of yuppie female stay-at-home mom friends for the vibrant and rowdy gay male community. Building a newfound friendship with Bruce, a recent divorcee from his ex-husband, the two attempt to redefine what it means to be single at an age where many – gay and straight – are already steadfastly coupled. Gail creates a new identity for herself, continually inserting herself into situations, often awkwardly comical, where she is always and ever more, the one and only female in a crowd of all gay men.
WRITER’S STATEMENT
“The motivation to write OVER & OUT came from an artistic desire to explore how two divergent groups can find commonality amongst what a vast majority of the population has that they are lacking. Women and gay men have often had an inexplicably connected relationship, but we’ve yet to see in television and film a show specifically about that bond, moving past the witty verbal rapport and delving into its complications, elations and as well as impediments. Age is scorching topic in both of these demographics, and the approaching specter of invisibility as one gets up there in years is a constant facet I want to also explore, specifically what happens when two people who feel anything but obscured find solace in the company of one another. A even crossover between the world of the single working woman and that of bifurcated LGBT New York, Gail is determined to make being over the hill a journey not of retreating, but breaking out.” –Drew Larimore
